Riding the wave of its resounding success in Fairfax County last year—where more than two dozen professionals earned advanced leadership credentials—the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University is expanding its Executive Certificate in Higher Impact Leadership program. The next chapter aims to unite even more trailblazers and changemakers from cities and counties across the region, fostering a dynamic network of forward-thinking leaders.

Enrolling now and beginning instruction in May 2025, this hands-on course is designed for experienced managers, supervisors, and public sector leaders looking to strengthen their skills in risk management, strategic leadership, and teamwork—with a special emphasis on public safety.

“With a particular focus on public safety, this program is designed for professionals seeking to enhance their leadership skills and tackle complex challenges in risk management, strategic leadership, and collaboration,” said Sisi Jou, director of the Schar School’s executive development program. “It offers a fantastic opportunity to expand professional networks and collaborate with leaders and experts in the field. The connections built here will be invaluable as participants continue their leadership journeys.”

A virtual information session takes place Thursday, April 17, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. The session is free and open to the public but register by email at ExecEd@gmu.edu.

The program aims to:

  • Foster regional collaboration: Public sector leaders often face similar challenges and connecting them across jurisdictions allows for shared solutions and stronger networks.
  • Expand knowledge and expertise: Participants will gain access to insights from top professionals in risk management and strategic leadership, learning best practices from across the region.
  • Strengthen public leadership: By equipping leaders with practical tools and strategies, the program helps improve decision-making, crisis response, and overall governance.
  • Build a lasting impact: Encouraging cooperation between cities and counties ensures that leadership improvements extend beyond individual organizations, benefiting the entire region.

The program provides practical training to help leaders at all levels think strategically, collaborate effectively, and make smarter decisions that drive real change in their organizations. Participants will also have the chance to connect with top experts and peers in the field, exchange best practices, and build valuable professional relationships.

Who Should Apply?

This program is ideal for experienced professionals in leadership roles. A bachelor’s degree is preferred, but applicants with strong work experience in related fields will be considered.
